Your first appointment may take up to 45 minutes, as the acupuncturist will go through the history of your illness asking about: your symptoms, life-style, emotional and physical health. You will be asked about body function such as appetite, digestion, bowel movements, circulation, sleep and energy levels. Your pulse will be checked and examined at three pairs of positions in each wrist. The relative differences between these help to indicate the energy balance of the body and which acupoints to treat.
You will receive the initial acupuncture treatment session after the consultation during which the acupuncturist insert a fine, sterile, disposable needle a few millimeters into the skin at each selected acupoint. This will cause little, if any, discomfort. You may notice a slight needle sensation of tingling or buzzing when the needle is inserted or rotated.
Needles usually left in place for 10 to 30 minutes and may be occasionally flicked or rotated to stimulate QI (energy) and draw or disperse energy from the point. In some cases, needles may be stimulated with electricity (electro acupuncture) or by using the laser (without needle).
