Since 2000, our clinical research studies have suggested that acupuncture is an effective treatment for migraines and headaches which showed significant positive results: Our clinical study published in the 1994 Issue of International Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (Tukmachi E. (1994) Migraine and acupuncture: clinical approach. Int J Alternat Comp Med 12; 3: 15-19) , resulted in the resolution or reduction in the frequency and severity migraine and a decrease or discontinuation of medications. It was concluded that Acupuncture can be used to provide sustained relief from migrainous headaches and to stimulate the release of body good feeling hormones (Endorphin). A clinical observation by our Clinic on Tension headache, published in a 2005 edition of The Journal of Chinese Medicine Journal (Tukmachi, E and F. Tension headache: a clinical study of its treatment by acupuncture. J Chin Med 2005; 78: 10-16). The Western medical treatment of tension headache often encounters difficulties with regard to clinical diagnosis, treatment and financial costs. Twenty-two patients suffering from tension headache were treated with acupuncture in this preliminary study. The results showed that four patients had complete relief from tension headaches and that there was a marked improvement in nine patients and fair improvement in six patients, with a failure to improve in only three patients. This paper also provides an introduction to the pathophysiology of, and therapeutic principles for, tension headaches from the conventional and traditional Chinese medicine points of view. |
