Is Acupuncture Also Considered For Both Preventive And Curative Medicine?

In China a doctor who can prevent disease was always considered more skilful than one who had to wait before giving treatment till his patient was ill. That is why the Chinese doctor received his money just so long as his patient remained healthy; when the patient fell ill, the payment ceased.

The reason behind this custom is that most illnesses, particularly severe chronic ones, only occur if a part or a system of the body is weakened. Only if the physiological weakness continues for a long time and is reinforced by some other defect or triggered off by an extreme factor, does an actual overt disease occur.

It is the great virtue of the Chinese pulse diagnosis that it is able to detect mild physiological weakness in the important organs of the body. The patient should then be treated immediately and because the malfunction has been caught at so early a stage, one treatment is often enough.

In most instances it is sufficient if the patient returns for treatment when the symptoms reappear. If the patient returns early before the symptoms are advanced, one treatment is often enough. The early symptoms often manifest themselves merely as fatigue and lethargy, rather than the more obvious specific symptoms of the disease. Most of the diseases that occur in a particular individual are different symptoms of the same basic illness. So, if a patient who was originally treated for one illness develops another, he can as a rule be very quickly cured by only a few treatments, possibly one, because the basic condition had already been treated before.
